Lantau Island

Lantau is a large but rather quiet mountainous island located near Hong Kong. The island became famous among tourists not so long ago, since before the end of the twentieth century Lantau was cut off from the mainland of China, and it was possible to get to it only by steamer. Nowadays, an amazing engineering invention, the Sing–Ma suspension bridge, leads to Lantau Island, whose second name is the Island of Prayers.

Attractions of Lantau

The island got its second name due to the fact that there are a total of about 15 monasteries and temples on its territory. Therefore, it is not surprising that one of the first attractions of the island is called the amazing Po Lin Monastery, which means "Precious Lotus" in Chinese. Built at the beginning of the last century, this monastery unites several temples on its territory, surrounded by magnificent gardens, where you can also admire extraordinary sculptures and statues.

But the main asset of the island is, of course, the Tian Tan (Big) Buddha – a bronze statue, 34 meters high, depicting the Buddha looking to the north, sitting on a throne in the shape of a lotus flower. There is a huge bell in the statue, it rings 108 times a day and, according to beliefs, protects humanity from sins. A fairly steep staircase of 268 steps leads to the foot of the Buddha.

You can also get to these attractions by one of the most incredible cable cars in the world - Ngong Ping 360, from the cabins of which you can see the whole of Lantau.

More than 120 hectares of the island's territory is occupied by an amusement park - Disneyland. The unusual picturesque landscapes of Lantau surrounding the park give it a special look. Interestingly, the famous Walt Disney cartoon characters on Lantau Island speak exclusively in Chinese.

For those who like a quiet, peaceful holiday, it is absolutely necessary to visit the fishing village of Tai O, which surprises tourists, first of all, with small houses built on stilts. Also here you can enjoy a variety of seafood and take a boat ride.

Despite the fact that Lantau is considered an island of monasteries, it is also a great place to relax on the beach. Numerous long beaches of the island attract tourists with cozy restaurants and sea clubs for outdoor enthusiasts. how is cricket different from other team games
